Amid the warmth of the space race in the 1960's, NASA immediately found that ballpoint pens would not work in the zero gravity bounds of its space containers. After significant innovative work, the Astronaut Pen was produced at a cost of $1 million. The pen worked in zero gravity, topsy turvy, submerged, on any surface including glass and furthermore delighted in some humble accomplishment as a knick knack back here on earth.

The Soviet Union, when looked with a similar issue, utilized a pencil.
